Green or fair trade

So I have noticed recently that the many who are in the green movement are also those who are in favor of fair trade, the problem is that the goals of the two movement seem to be contradictory.
Part of being green is buying foods and other goods that have a low carbon footprint. Usually these are grown locally and produced with organic fertilizers and without pesticides.
Fair trade on the other hand means that producers of goods are offered a fair price for the goods they produce. These goods are often procured as directly from the producer as possible, usually by removing the middle man (to use a bad marketing phrase).
Now here's the delima, fair trade items are often purchased from a variety of foreign producers and then sold in the US. Fair trade by definition is not locally grown and is usually shipped either from overseas or south america, making the carbon footprint of the goods high compared to domestic or even non-organic agribusiness products.
